Terms & Conditions

1. About us

The Somerset Craftsman is a bespoke fitted furniture business operated by a sole trader based in Somerset, England. These terms and conditions govern all work carried out by The Somerset Craftsman for clients. By accepting a quotation or paying a deposit, you agree to these terms.

2. Quotations

All quotations are provided free of charge following a site visit or detailed consultation. Quotations are valid for 7 days from the date of issue. Prices are fixed for the scope of work described; any changes to specification, materials, or dimensions after a quotation has been accepted may result in a revised price, which will be agreed in writing before work proceeds.

Any additional items requested on the day or during installation that fall outside the agreed scope of work will be charged at the following day rates, with a minimum charge of a half day:

  • Labour only (on-site): £250 per 8-hour day
  • Workshop rate: £350 per 8-hour day

3. Deposits and payment

All deposits are non-refundable. Payment may be made by bank transfer, debit/credit card, or cash. We reserve the right to suspend work if payments are not received on time.

Fitted furniture projects

Payment is structured in three stages:

  • 65% deposit required to book your project into our schedule.
  • 25% due at the critical measurements visit, prior to materials being ordered.
  • 10% due on the day of installation, upon satisfactory completion of the work.

Labour-only projects

A deposit of 20% of the total quoted price is required to secure your place in our schedule. The remaining balance is due on the day of installation.

4. Lead times and scheduling

Lead times are provided as estimates at the time of quotation and are subject to change. We will give reasonable notice of any significant delay. Installation dates will be confirmed once the deposit has been received and materials have been ordered. We ask that the installation area is clear and accessible on the agreed date; any delays caused by the client may result in rescheduling charges.

If we are waiting on design decisions from you that delay progress on your project, we reserve the right to bring other jobs forward in the schedule. Your installation date will be rearranged once all outstanding decisions have been confirmed.

5. Design and specification

All designs remain the intellectual property of The Somerset Craftsman until final payment has been received. Drawings and plans provided during the design process are for approval purposes and may not be reproduced or shared without permission. It is the client's responsibility to review and approve all drawings before production begins. Changes requested after production has started may incur additional charges.

6. Materials

We use high-quality materials sourced from reputable suppliers. Natural materials such as timber and veneer may exhibit natural variation in grain, colour, and texture — this is characteristic of the material and not a defect. Where specific materials or finishes are requested, we will confirm availability and lead times before accepting the order.

7. Installation

Installation is carried out by The Somerset Craftsman. We take care to protect your property during installation; however, we ask that fragile items and valuables are removed from the work area in advance. Minor making-good (filling, touching up paintwork) is included where necessary. Redecoration is the client's responsibility unless otherwise agreed in writing.

8. Snagging and sign-off

On completion of installation, we will walk through the work with you. Any snagging items identified at this stage will be remedied promptly. Sign-off and final payment are expected on the day of installation. Snagging items raised after sign-off will be addressed within a reasonable timeframe at no additional charge, provided they relate to workmanship or materials supplied by us.

9. Warranty

All joinery, including fitted furniture, is covered against defects in workmanship and materials for a period of 6 months from the date of installation. This warranty does not cover damage caused by misuse, accidental damage, water ingress, structural movement of the building, or modifications made by third parties. Spray finishes are warranted against peeling and delamination under normal use.

The warranty is conditional upon receipt of full payment. If the final 10% balance is not paid on the day of installation, no warranty or guarantee applies to any part of the fitted furniture. This includes all joinery and any component of the fitted furniture, regardless of whether that individual part appears unaffected. Any reduction in the final payment — for any reason — will equally void the guarantee on any part of the fitted furniture. Where the final 10% has not been paid, any decision to honour the 6-month defects period remains entirely at our discretion.

10. Cancellations

If you wish to cancel an order after the deposit has been paid, the deposit is non-refundable. If cancellation occurs after materials have been ordered or production has begun, you may be liable for additional costs incurred up to the point of cancellation. We will provide a written breakdown of any such costs. We reserve the right to cancel an order in exceptional circumstances; in this event, any deposit paid will be refunded in full.

11. Liability

Our liability to you is limited to the value of the contract. We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, including loss of use or loss of earnings. Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.

12. Governing law

These terms and conditions are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
